In order to enhance the effectiveness, use, and reach of UNDP evaluations, the Evaluation Office (EO) is conducting a study that examines its current dissemination strategies. One facet of this study is reaching out to the reading audience and asking for participation, insight, and comments regarding how our products are received and used. This study is being conducted by Suazion. For additional information, please visit:
Following are brief explanations of several terms and acronyms used in the questionnaire at right.
ADRs (Assessments of Development Results) are UNDP EO reports published on a country basis, e.g. the recent Assessment of Development Results: Jamaica.
An [international] AID AGENCY is an organization dedicated to distributing aid, either humanitarian (e.g., emergency relief efforts) or development (foreign) aid aimed at helping achieve long-term decelopmental goals. Aid agencies exist within governments (e.g., UK DFID), between governments as multilateral donors (e.g., UNDP), and as private voluntary organizations (e.g., ActionAid).
A CSO (civil society organization) is a term that encompasses a wide variety of organizations engaged in but not necessarily specializing in development work — from NGOs to community-based organizations, indigenous people’s organizations, academia, journalist associations, faith-based organizations, and trade unions or associations. Once again, there is some overlap between the definitions of NGOs and CSOs — for example, both are necessarily non-state actors whose aims are neither to generate profits nor to seek governing power.
An EVALUATION BRIEF (or PUBLICATION BRIEF ) is a short, summarized version of a full-length evaluation report or product. Typically, the brief is an executive summary of the full report. (Download a sample Evaluation Brief of the Evaluation of UNDP's Role and Contribution in the HIV/AIDS Response in Southern Africa and Ethiopia – 167KB PDF.)
An NGO (non-governmental organization) is, in the broadest sense, a body with a specific operational mandate that is not part of the government. NGOs are typically non-business and non-profit. There is some overlap between the definitions of NGOs, CSOs, and aid agencies — for example, the Red Cross is an NGO as well as an international humanitarian aid agency.
PROGRAMMATIC EVALUATIONS are UNDP EO reports focusing on specific projects and programs — on local, regional, and global levels, e.g., Evaluation of the Second Global Cooperation Framework.
STAKEHOLDERS are all the individuals, groups, and organizations involved in a particular project or program. The term is used here most broadly.
THEMATIC OR STRATEGIC EVALUATIONS are UNDP EO reports focusing on a specific theme or focus area. Examples include Evaluation of Gender Mainstreaming in UNDP and Assessment of Micro-Macro Linkages in Poverty Alleviation in South Asia.
